Can you tell us more about your design studio?
Bagua+Bhava is an interior design practice based in Hong Kong. We love doing design not only in the Interior but also in Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape, Furniture, and Graphic Design. We create original and diverse designs for human beings and we try to make the world better and the dream comes true.
How did you get to know about The Nate design competition?
I got to know about this competition from Go Hung who is my professor and a local artist in Hong Kong and he had a show in The Nate before.
What made you apply for the competition?
Three aspects will be considered when I apply for a competition or a project. First of all, the location. I think this is a Hong Kong designer’s responsibility to apply to the local design competition to create more amazing ideas for our city. Secondly, the organizer. District15 is not similar to other developers in Hong Kong and they have lofty ideals and I do appreciate that. Lastly, the signification. Creating something for human beings and making the world better is my vision. Therefore, I made the Hybrid-Working proposal because that will be a significant new normal in Hong Kong even in the world.
Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspiration?
I am still learning how to be more creative indeed so I read the design news every day and try my best to absorb from my idols such as Thomas Heatherwick, Yabu Pushelberg, and TonyChi. Some design media like Sleeper, Yatzer, Design Anthology share quite a few wonderful design works and ideas for the designers.
From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and the environment?
Louis Kahn said, “Design is not making beauty, beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love.” For a designer, we need to be empathetic. Think about the functions in the space but not just beauty as a designer is not similar to the artists, we need to solve the problems for the people.
Tell us about your stay at The Nate.
That was an incredible experience for me. The rooms in The Nate are super comfortable and the service is impeccable. There is a common kitchen area can make some new friends and they are friendly and polite. Most of the time I stayed in The Nate because here is a good place for relaxing, working, and playing. Thus, I would like to say thank you again to District15 and The Nate. Very amazing!
